Event 2 - Jess Irish _ DESMA 9
“Everywhere we look for microplastics, we find them” was one of the slides during Jess Irish’s presentation and I thought that that was a very powerful statement given the state of the world as we know it. Jess Irish uses both art and science to convey her message in her documentary. Her documentary This Moral Plastik dives into plastics and their impact on the globe. Amid the lockdown, a bereaved mother unfolds a surprising journey within and across oceans to understand the contemporary landscape of single-use synthetics. The documentary includes with hand-drawn illustrations and poetic interludes which bring art and imagination to an otherwise serious topic about the scientific and environmental impact of plastics. This was my favorite part about her work that she was able to include things that you wouldn’t normally see in a documentary about science or environmental issues. She beings speaking about the origin of the work plastic which derives from plassein which is translated to meaning to mold or shape. Because of their ease-of-use modern society has dumped plastics into the ocean harming its wildlife and our state of being. She conducted research to find out why these plastics were finding their way into the ocean and also studied why she should even care. She even created a film research book where she kept all of her findings about plastics. Hearing about this documentary and listening to her process was really inspiring to me because I am a filmmaker who wants to make a difference with the art I create. Seeing her work shows that you can use art to educate and to bring awareness to issues that can be overlooked by the doomsday approaches that news-outlets use to inform the masses.
