I think that Boo Chapple’s work “Transjuicer Can you hear the Femur Play?” is very fascinating. In this interview, she talks about the piece and what it hopes to invoke.

The concept of the work is to make audio speakers out of bone. “The development of this project involved working with the piezoelectric nature of the bone matrix in order to cause the bone to vibrate in such a way as to generate audible sound.”
As a sound designer for both theatre/film I find the concept really interesting, projects like these have the ability to reinvent the way we think about sounds and how we go about creating sounds in an art space. Sound is a fundamental part of how we interact with the world and hearing is one of our most important senses. "Chapple aims to investigate phenomena occurring beyond our human capacity to sense and amplify these interactions." How the piece functions is as follows: the “bone” speakers transduce electromagnetic waveforms – in this case of dairy sounds, bone songs, cow songs, milk songs – into nano-sonic vibrations. These can be listened to on headphones provided as part of the installation. Art manipulates our interpretation of sound waves and the source of those vibrations.
This ties directly into the lecture about the origins of nanotechnology and Richard Feynman’s quote, “The principles of physics…do not speak against the possibility of maneuvering things atom by atom.” He learned that the behavior of nanoscale objects can be used to create new effects and Boo Chapple took that to a whole new level by using the bones as a sound source. Transjuicer expands the possibilities of physics by causing vibrations on a nanoscale and showing the realm of possibilities when it comes to manipulating things on a nanoscale.
